Inauguration of a new school classroom block (Feb 2003)

The 20th of February, 2003, was a happy day for us and for our school in Katondo. With many guests of honour (with the Zambian Deputy Minister of Education, the Mayor of Kabwe, two permanent secretaries, two representatives of the EU delegation of Lusaka and different representatives of the press, TV and radio) as well as 200 citizens of Katondo, of course our teachers and about 500 pupils of Grades 1-5 we celebrated the inauguration of a new school classroom block. The building material was financed by an EU-Fond for Zambia. The school was built by volunteers, mainly the citizens of Katondo and about 100 parents and relatives of our pupils. The representatives of the EU came to take a look at the result of their financial support. Martin Hartmann, who is the Co-ordinator of all eight schools was elected into the Project Committee as Treasurer. He had already previously presented the comprehensive financial report to the donor organisation, and through his effort the building project was finished on time and within budget. This was commended by the financial backers as extraordinary and highly satisfactory. There was a joyful atmosphere at the celebration despite the continuous rain. The children sang and played enthusiastically, there were a couple of rousing speeches and a group of women presented a sketch. After that we sat down to a delicious meal, which not only appealed to the pupils, but to all distinguished guests!!
