The concept of BOCCS

Seven of the eight BOCCS schools were built in the worst slums of Kabwe. There, children in destitute environments, who are often without electricity and water, have the opportunity to go to school.

The schools are attended by single and double orpahns and, if possible, other children from their families. Girls have pre ferred status when it comes to school admission.

The BOCCS schools do not demand a school fee. Unlike public schools, they do not require school uniforms. Families may voluntarily contribute to the costs of their children‘s education with donations of food, clothes or money. The costs add up to approximately EUR 0.50 per trimester.

All eight BOCCS orphan-schools offer a first opportunity to graduate after 7th grade. Whoever qualifi es with a test ter 7th grade, may continue their school career and attend „Kabwe Main“, the largest school of this project downtown of the provincial capital Kabwe, for grades 8 and 9. Once they pass their fi nals after 9th grade, they may apply at one f the public schools to keep studying until final graduation.

BOCCS itself is able to offer a one-year-long practical apprenticeship, but without being licenced in the end. In a domestic economy class, girls may learn how to work fabrics (tailoring, sewing), as well as crotcheting and knitting. In the school’s wood workshop, boys may learn technical skills such as wood-working.
